Where might i adopt an elephant?

The sun shone yesterday - can i get a woot woot?
Its a bright and cheerful day here at LRT because

1. The sun is shining - did i mention this already?

2. BF is coming home from West Virginia today!!! He isn't normally away so much and I seriously miss him like crazy every time he goes - this time the trip was for work and i hope he comes back in one piece, i can't say what BF does for his job but I can say last time he went he came home with a video of himself being tasered, fun right?

3. Yesterday i got to spend time with one of my besties and see a movie, I love getting to spend time with Mandy, she is seriously one of the sweetest, loveliest girls i know and her love for animals is immense!  Whenever something is wrong with fur baby she is the first person i call not just for advice since she is a vet technician but for moral support, she has more then a a few fur babies of her own!

So of course we had to pick a movie with the hot guy from Twilight AND animals in it win/win! - We saw Water for Elephants!

Water for Elephants Book Review

Add caption

My lovely friend (and brand new bride Amy) lent me this book a couple of weeks ago and i might have devoured it in a few hours, i am that girl who once i have a good book in my hands i respond to nothing and nobody until i've turned the last page!

The book was written by Canadian author Sara Gruen, go Canada!

Book Flap Summary:  so and so did this and that (don't you love how in the draft form of my posts i write things like this, i left it in here today for your amusement)

As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie.
It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

About the Author: Sara Gruen moved to the United States from Canada in 1999 for a technical writing job. When she got laid off two years later, she decided to try her hand at writing fiction. A devoted animal lover, her first novel, Riding Lessons, explored the intimate and often healing spaces between people and animals and was a USA Today bestseller.
Sara Gruen’s awards include the 2007 Book Sense Book of the Year Award, the Cosmo Fun Fearless Fiction Award, the Bookbrowse Diamond Award for Most Popular Book, the Friends of American Literature Adult Fiction Award and the ALA/Alex Award 2007.  Sara Gruen lives in the south with her husband, sons, horses, dogs, cats and a goat.

My review:  I really really enjoyed this book, i have heard a few people say it was hard to get into but i was sucked in immediately, i turned every page eager to find out more, i felt compassion, i felt horror, i felt love, i just felt through the entire book

The ending was not a surprise but there was a lovely bit that i was not expecting

During the book i was able to picture the actors who play the characters as I had seen the movie previews and knew Reese Witherspoon (love her) and Robert Pattinson (love him) were playing the lead characters!  It doesn't bother me too much that I didn't get to imagine the characters myself

Water for Elephants Movie Review

Normally i hate watching movies right after reading the books, the movies always end up feeling "empty" does that make sense?  Instead i actually prefer watching the movie then reading the book - but i truly enjoyed this movie, it followed pretty closely to the book and we might have been a little bit whole lot weepy at the end!

So i'm completely incapacitated today, Christina and I hit up the UFC class at our gym yesterday and now i remember why i have a love/hate relationship with this class, its only 45 minutes so the minion from hell instructor packs as much in as she can, it was about 5 minutes before i was drenched in sweat and 10 minutes into it felt like i had been there for an hour already - i am really excited for the class though, i love having this feeling, you know the one where you can't actually lower yourself onto the loo because your thighs hate you THAT much - fun times!  I'm hoping they will loosen up in time for Zumba with my favourite instructor tonight!

Okay - Have a happy day everyone, enjoy the sunshine, vitamin D all around :o)

What I dot dot dot

I have a product review, funny list and recipe for you today but first a i'm-a-total-space-cadet rant...

Over the weekend i am always a keener and start a blog post for each day of the week that way i'm never stuck at 10pm the night before wondering what the heck i'm going to blog about for the next days post, plus since i'm totally forgetful i enjoy clicking on the day in unpublished posts and finding what i'm writing about

Todays was exactly this - Wed: What I...
Nope there was nothing after the dot dot dot
Now how helpful was that? I remember doing it too, thinking in a few minutes inspiration for Wednesday will come to me but until then i'm totally going to devour these chips, and since i LOVE these chips i might have got distracted for about, oh you know, 3 days

So yesterday (kind of today but don't let me confuse you with the fact i write the full posts the day before) I made the BEST dinner!

Since i didn't photograph it, here I made it for lunch today and got up at 6am so I could photograph it for you all (i really hate taking photos in my house at night, the lighting is absolute crap!)

Here it is...
Sorry for iPhone pic, my dslr battery died and the spare is hiding from me!

Amazing looking huh?

Teriyaki Salmon on top of a bed of Spinach, Brown Rice, with Roasted Brussel Sprouts and Cherry Tomatoes

So because i used prepared fish to make above dinner, and i know how good it looks - i thought i would do a review for you

Marina Del Rey Teriyaki Salmon

This isn't that square fish you remember from your childhood, no sketchy ingredients here

Hello quick and easy because if thawed the salmon is cooked in 6 minutes!  If you are forgetful like me or just plain blonde and don't defrost it cooks in 9 minutes! You just drop the package in boiling water it's done like dinner, except it is dinner, hahahaa

This fish is yummy in my tummy

Ingredients: salmon fillets, water, seasoning (salt, hydrolyzed plant protein (corn, soya), honey, soya sauce (water, wheat, soybeans, salt, sodium benzoate), sesame seeds, canola oil, rice vinegar (water, rice, sugar, salt), lactic acid.

I prefer making my own fish still but in a pinch this fish is easy and oh so tasty
I can't wait to try the other flavours Mediterranean Salmon, Orange & Mango Tilapia, Tilapia en Provencale

So i've decided that todays What I Wednesday will be all about random things that made me giggle today

What I giggled at Wednesday

1. Hot Fuzz:  Its one of my all time favourite movies - its British (as most of the best things are), you see i hate all movies Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell, i just don't find them funny but Hot Fuzz made my stomach hurt i laughed SO hard!!!

2. My Dog:  She was making me ccrraazzyy last night barking at me but with an empty bladder, full tummy of treats and water bowl topped up, i had no idea what she wanted so i finally put the laptop down and followed her into the kitchen where she picked up mr. sheep (that she had carefully chosen from the treat box downstairs) and ran in circles so i could chase her, after about 20 minutes she crawled into my lap in the hallway and gave me kisses while i rubbed her belly, she makes me SO happy

3. Modern Family: Best show on tv right now, if you haven't watched it - stop what you are doing and stream it now!

4. Silly Lists:  This was one of my favourites like 10 years ago and it still brings giggles to my facial area, I've edited down to the really funny ones

Fun Things To Do On An Elevator
(not sure who to credit, this list is ALL over the web)

1. Grimace painfully while smacking your forehead & muttering, 'Shut up, dammit, all of you just shut UP!'
2. Sell Girl Scout cookies.
3. Crack open your briefcase or purse, and while peering inside ask: 'Got enough air in there?'
4. Offer name tags to everyone getting on the elevator. Wear yours upside-down.
5. Stand silent and motionless in the corner, facing the wall, without getting off.
6. When arriving at your floor, grunt and strain to yank the doors open, then act embarrassed when they open by themselves.
7. Greet everyone getting on the elevator with a warm handshake and ask them to call you Admiral
8. Stare, grinning, at another passenger for a while, and then announce: 'I've got new socks on!'
9. Meow occasionally.
10. Frown and mutter 'gotta go, gotta go' then sigh and say 'oops!'
11. Sing 'Mary had a little lamb' while continually pushing buttons.
12. Ask each passenger getting on if you can push the button for them.
13. Say 'Ding!' at each floor.
14. Lean against the button panel.
15. Say 'I wonder what all these do' and push the red buttons.
16. Listen to the elevator walls with a stethoscope.
17. Bring a chair along.
18. Carry a blanket and clutch it protectively.
19. Make explosion noises when anyone presses a button.
20. If anyone brushes against you, recoil and holler 'Bad touch!'

So its been almost 3 months since we have returned from Aruba and i've missed it every freaking day, here is Part ONE of the recap of our trip and a few of my favourite photos

Aruba Travelblog

PART ONE

Oh yeah, I'm back with another witty, bad grammered (not a word I know because iPhone autocorrect wants to turn it into Frankfurt?) travel blog for all my friends, family and random people creeping my FB! So hold on tight and prepare for the ridiculous travel shenanigans of myself, my lovely (till he denies me some kind of ridiculous unnecessary but I MUST HAVE IT souvenir) boyfriend and our awesome friends

Day one

- Well nothing says vacation like a good snowstorm hours before you leave for holiday! Planes weren't delayed though, must have been my not very silent prayer of - "dear god I can't take one more day of this snow and I might expire if I'm not on a beach with a fruity drink in my hand in exactly 12 hours!" I only said it about 9 (thousand) times

- Once at the airport I realize I had checked all the snacks in our luggage and cue the angry tummy noises I make the oh-so-wise decision to get in the tims line up with a wait of about a month but at least I can't see snow anymore, it's progress!

- On the plane trying not to elbow the guy in the seat beside me in the teeth, i lost count of how many times dude has elbowed me in the ribs and am slowly planning my revenge (hint: it involves a pen, my orange juice cup, the seat tray and an in flight magazine!) feel free to draw your own conclusions as to how this will end up

- STILL on the plane, have made kind of peace with guy next to me as he has let me out to pee on more then one occasion, we won't talk about what happened with the arm rest incident though, who has the rights to both armrests? There must be some kind of airplane etiquette lesson they could give before takeoff, maybe instead of emergency procedures because let's be honest who actually listens to those?

- I am quite pleased with myself as I've remembered I have some organic chips in my bag and I happily snack on them while Dave snores and I read my book entitled "skinny bitch", I'm sure there will be a review of this somewhere on the blog before the end of the trip, apparently it's QUITE controversial book, I'm just pleased that 2 pages in they are swearing at me kind of like how I wanna swear at elbowresthogger

- Time to land, let's hope I stay awake, I kind of fell asleep through take off, kind of the over rated part of a plane trip if u ask me! No one claps when u take off, just the landing - note to self: clap upon take off next time to give the pilot a self esteem boost for the rest of the flight!

- Once off the plane, customs is a breeze (unless u pick the slowest custom agent ever which of course we did) and instead of being herded on to the tour bus we make the smartest decision ever and take a cab to the resort so we can check in before the other 100 tourists get there, if u take all inclusive trips you MUST do this!

- We change out of our parkas (kidding we didnt have any on but we left during a snowstorm, there were many layers people), we claim our rooms and rush back down for lunch and are so overwhelmed at the choices we eat almost one of everything on the menu and in true island tradition the food takes about about 3 hours to come but our attentive waitress keeps bringing the martinis and beer so by the time our food arrives we are completely sloshed and cheering non stop about our love for Aruba

- Dinner is fancy schmancy, lots of courses, steak and wine but bed time arrives about 9pm, it's even sadder because that's 8pm Canada time, we have been up since 1am though travelblog readers, I promise to get into more shenanigans soon!
Next installment will involve a private island, scaly creatures and resort crashing!

Day two

- It's our first full day in Aruba and I wake up raring to go, Dave isn't impressed as it's only 6am Brantford time and he has made himself quite a nest in the plethora of pillows our bed comes with so I proceed to unpack as loudly as possible (imagine slamming drawers and stomping feet) and suddenly Dave is up and ready, teehehee
- We decide to check out the fitness room to offset the large quantities of food and alcohol we consumed and are highly amused at the sign when you walk in "no flip-flops or thongs please", dear god if there are people working out in thongs I'll gladly gain 10 pounds this trip then workout in here
- The treadmills have tv's so we pound a few miles out before heading back to our room which is really organized now, slammed drawers and all
- oatmeal for breakfast and Dave says it's not nearly as good as mine, aww he misses ground flax and chia seeds, we then take off to explore Aruba
- Clint and I become obsessed with taking photos of iguanas and he names himself the iguana hunter and I'm sure it's just the kind of show TLC needs to boost it's ratings because honestly have you seen "I didn't know I was pregnant", definitely not the quality programming it used to be
- We decide after lunch to take a bus to the palm beach area and it goes shockingly well, maybe my luck with public transportation in foreign countries is finally changing! We decide to sneak into Riu Palace (Resort crashers another great show idea) and we steal some deck chairs and check out the beach, after a quick swim and yet another nap, we head back to the resort quite proud of ourselves for stealing a wee bit of Riu palaces grandeur by utilizing their "paying patrons only" beach
- it's private island time, we are so excited about having a private island we make sure to go there at least once a day! - after sucking back one too many tropicaladas and ohhing and ahhing over the wedding being set up and several hints dropped to the boys about how nice it would be to get married on a private island we find out our flamingo beach is closed for the prior mentioned wedding, we decide we would never inconvenience other resort folks by doing such a thing and head back for yet another..., you guessed it nap!
- Tonight is Caribbean BBQ night and I'm pretty sure Dave ends up with meat sweats as he consumes enough BBQ beef I think he might start to moo any minute now
- We end the night with drinks and dessert in the lobby but there is a mix up with the flavour of hagaan daz ice-cream and honestly if this is the biggest thing that goes wrong on our trip, I am a happy girl!

Day Three
- Wake up to the sound of a giant cruise ship docking at about 5am!
- Today we rent a jeep, are u excited? We definitely are until we arrive at the car rental place and it doesn't contain the words budget, hertz or thrifty in the title, no no it's a sketchy rental place in the middle of nowhere with lawn chairs for furniture, no biggie, we are in vacation we can roll with this, the jeep they pull round is rusting, dirty, dented and has duct tape on it, SO not impressed, once we figure out Heathers seatbelt doesn't work we refuse to go anywhere and the rental scammer (can't call him a guy anymore) mutters it's the same with a new or old jeep, sure mr. scammer whatever you say, when we nicely ask for a ride back to our hotel we suddenly have a brand new jeep coming for us, so let's just get comfy in our lawn chairs and see what scammy (his new nickname) has in store for us next
- We finally free ourselves from car rental hell and head out to the open road well let's be more exact, the open subdivisions, it's impossible to find our way around as there are no street signs, finally we come across an oil refinery and a jail, hmmm this is getting a wee bit sketchy but wait a minute, there is some beautiful cliffs and beaches if you look beyond the killer goats (not sure if the goats are really killers, just adds some flavour to the travel blog really) besides it sounds like a great monty python skit and I'm on a roll coming up with tv show ideas - At Baby Beach we have a great swim and are best friends with the cutest puppy that moseys on over and seems to adopt us as his new family, he is SO cute so we give him some water and organic cookies and as we leave he looks so pitiful for a brief moment before pouncing on an unsuspecting sunbathing tourist! Oh and we named him beaches it seemed appropriate
- Next stop is the resort for lunch, it's free what can we say and we massively enjoy signing our bill for a $200 lunch knowing it's included in our all inclusive package
- After one too many rum collins (I'm not too drunk to know they are called tom colllins thats just what the bartender made us) we are on our way to the California lighthouse where I curse out several tourists for leaning their hot pink bikes against the well known tourist attraction utterly ruining my photo op! A lovely Italian place with the most beautiful view is spotted and the boys promise to bring us back tomorrow for drinks at sunset, upon leaving we notice the sandwich board advertising $4 sandwiches and $2 beers, our guys do like to spoil us on holiday :oP
- We head back for another amazing steak dinner at the resort and to tuck the jeep in for the night! (did I mention after all the jeep hassle we kept it for another night, lol!)
- Tomorrow is the natural pool, abandoned gold mine and bat infested caves, I can hardly wait! And I bet you can't either...

So I heard this quote on the tv last night and i really liked it

"Innovation doesn't really matter unless it does something that matters to you"

I really liked it then i realized it was for a cell phone commercial, hahahaaaa
So it made me wonder - what kind of cell phone do you use?
I am a devoted iPhone worshiper :o)

Stealth Agent...

... Or Snotty Cow, you decide!

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend, don't worry i'll explain the title, no keeping you in suspense today

So my weekend consisted of playing stealth undercover agent as i tried to maneuver my first wedding without a + one as you see my + one was the Best Man!

*** I will be back at lunch with more wedding photos!
______________________________

Before i get to my recap, I'm going to make a confession... In real life i'm a bit shy

It used to be really bad, i mean, before i would make a phone call i would write down what i wanted to say so i wouldn't get flustered

The real turning point for my shydom (new LRT word, i should start a LRT dictionary!) was in College when i attended a small campus of a larger college and i knew all my teachers and fellow students and started to become very confident in who i was growing up to be, i remember giving a speech to be a member of the student council in front of the whole college, a speech, in front of people and i didn't pass out, hello progress! (plus i was totally voted in over several other candidates, yay me)

But lately with BF being in this wedding i've realized that when in social situations with lots of people I don't know very well I revert to shydom and come of as a giant snobby snotty bitch

I avoid eye contact with everyone but my iPhone, my phone is my awkward crutch, technology has seriously set us shy people back many years!

I'm very pleasant when people start conversations with me but i'm nowhere near the happy, bright, funny girl i am in real life

The real me lurks somewhere hidden behind the bored looking eyes and the constant sighs

One on one situations and small groups with people i know, i am chatty, amusing and take most conversations to "the dirty place", i laugh loudly and smile with my eyes

But if we are in a large group and i don't know you well you won't get to see this part of me and i apologize for that

This is something I want to work on and for everyone that reads this blog that actually "knows me" thanks for being patient and discovering the real me, for those who don't and have come across me and maybe thought i was a little rude, i apologize and hopefully reading this blog gives you a little insight into what i'm really like and maybe one day i'll show you the charmer that is lurking under here

Okay, enough self realization confession time! Lets talk weekend recap

Friday: After a long day of having Royal Wedding fun at work, I attempted to dress shop which resulted in nada, then i decided to cheer myself up by attempting a new self tanner since we haven't exactly had much sunshine here in Ontario to get that sunkissed glow i like having at fancy events

The self tanner (which shall remain nameless) came in the form of cloths and left with me a horrible smell and no tan at all, WTF?  I did have orange-ish hands though, i called them my oompa loompa mittens

Rest of the night was spent being stinky, eating pizza and taking a late night run to Dairy Delite and inhaling what is the most perfect raspberry sundae ever, mmmmmm - BF always knows to cheer me up with hugs and dessert!

Saturday: I drove BF to Stoneycreek, did some shopping for something to wear and ended up with too many dresses, and then before you knew it, it was wedding time so i hauled my pretty party dressed self back to Stoneycreek and watched our good friends get their Happily Ever After - awwwww :o)

Sunday: Slept as late as possible which was only 8am, sigh!  Then it was time to get ready for another party - I baked cupcakes from scratch for my little sisters 30th birthday, woot woot!

Had a lovely lunch with my family, got my nails done with my mum and sister, (it becoming a lovely tradition for us 3), then my mum helped me deocrate cupcakes and it was BBQ party time

I had a great time hanging out with my dad, playing with my furry neiece, kidding with my mum and watching my sister get showered with love for her special day

However, it wasn't just my sisters special day it was my lovely mum-in-laws birthday so i made sure to make her some special cupcakes just for her though i'm pretty sure you are reading this Norm and i know you had at least one ;o)

Then it was finally home time for some snuggles with the furry baby and vedge on the couch and catch up on all my lovely blogs I had abandoned over the weekend

______________________________

So like i mentioned my BF was Best Man for one of our good friends this weekend so i was left to navigate a wedding all by my lonesome, here are my tips for surviving this kind of social situation

1. Is your + one at the wedding day breakfast?  Thats okay, drag your parents over to your house for 2 hours to help you pick out a dress since you might have bought 5 in the span of 30 minutes and you don't think ANY of them look good!

2. When you arrrive find out the location of your best man BF before asking a weddng planner who insists on using his walkie talkie to track him down with the following conversation

Planner: "Sam* to John*, Sam to John.... John, i have a woman here who needs to find the groom and speak to him immediately"

Donna: "ummmm hello?, I want the Best Man"

Planner: "Don't worry maam, saying you are looking for the groom will find him faster"

Donna (in her head): Yeah but it also makes the coat check girls think i'm some floozy making a last minute grab for the groom before he gets hitched!

I definitely got some dirty looks as i walked to the grooms suite and nabbed our DSLR so i could take some pictures instead of aiding in the release of runaway groom

* I changed their names to protect the identity and because, well, i can't remember what they actually were

3. Show up late enough that you don't have to sit alone for half an hour waiting for other guests to show up but not late enough that when everyone is seated and they have run out of chairs so an usher has to noisily grab you one while everyone stares... awkward!

4. Try not to sit next to nosy nelly who insists on watching you fidget in your dress that your dad picked out, watched you type this post on your iPhone and peeked at all your Aruba photos you notice BF has left on the camera, next time you should advise the usher you want to sit beside someone shy, preferably one staring at their iphone!
5. Make sure you wear a loose dress in preparation for the appetizers + 6 course dinner which most definitely results in a food baby - that way you don't have to feel awkward at a table of people you don't know who all know each other AND be self concious about your expanding belly

6. Keep a wine glass in your hand at all times - when the waiter asks if you are done, grip the stem tighter and explain you are sitting alone and let them give you a kind look, fill that sucker back up, and slowly back away

7. When you are left sitting on your own, just keep your eyes on your man and imagine your own wedding and how amazing it will be... you might surf a few wedding dress sites on your iPhone as well, what can i say, I was just pre planning, at least i didn't start a list!

8. For a little added adventure, start taking silly self portraits with your iPhone and sending them to BF at the head table, this is the only G rated one i could find, hahahaaa!

Okay friends, I have some serious recipe and photography to do this week, I don't have a single recipe for you this post, but i will make up for it tomorrow, pinky swear!

So in conclusion, thanks for letting me smile with my blog and always always go "to the dirty place" teeheheee
