Superfood to the rescue

How was everybodys family day?  BF and i were lucky enough to relax and cuddle with the doodle all morning then we visited our families and looked at new house model homes, we are still fighting over discussing which style of house to go with, we get excited about it one day then procrastinate the next, all i want is somewhere to store all my chia seeds, which leads me into my post today (did you see how i did that? pretty smooth eh?)

You will notice in all my breakfast posts i use several ingredients on a frequent basis (read: every day), soooo i'm sure you area all scratching your head and wondering what they are and if they want to be cool like me (and who doesn't), where to they get them?

So here is the scoop, the down-lo, the hizzy (is hizzy even a real word?) all info was derived from buzzle.com
DISCLAIMER: I am in no way an expert, as with real life there are some drawbacks to being a super hero (aka super food) please research yourself before consuming

CHIA SEEDS
About:

Also known as 'Salvia Hispanica' were once considered magical seeds by the people for their nutritional values. These are flowering plants with white or purple flowers and belong to the mint family.
  • Being rich in essential fatty acids, chia seeds reduces high blood pressure and is best for cardiovascular health.
  • Chia seeds health benefits for diabetics have an ability to stabilize blood sugar levels.
  • Chia seeds boost metabolism and also promotes lean muscle mass. It is one of those foods, which is rich nutrients and is filling, but is low in calories. So, chia seeds are used for weight loss and weight maintenance programs.
  • One of the most important chia seeds health benefits is that they help in improving the function of the brain. The essential fatty acids promote efficient nerve transmission.
  • Chia seeds are considered one of the best energy enhancing foods, as it is rich in nutrients. It has been found to be effective in enhancing the performance of athletes.
MY THOUGHTS:
Why do I like chia seeds? (i'm veering into informercial territory again here, cue: sweeping arm gestures once more) They totally rock my smoothies because they get all jello-like when they meet water, its like a cool experiment, yes sometimes i revert back to grade 7 science class - FYI: i refused to dissect the frog

  • Flaxseed meal can be considered as part of low glycemic index diet since it helps prevent fluctuations in blood sugar. It helps stabilize blood sugar levels.
  • Nutritional value of flaxseed meal is quite higher as omega 3 from flaxseed meal prevent unnecessary clotting of blood and thus reduce the chances of heart attack and stroke.
  • Flaxseed is rich in dietary fiber and so regular consumption of flaxseed meal can improve your digestive health. The meal helps reduce the symptoms of stomach problems such as indigestion, constipation, frequent bloating, etc.

My Thoughts: i add ground flax to all my breakfast foods, anything that helps control my girly hormones and has that many healthy benefits is fine by me

MACA ROOT POWDER
About:

Maca root is one of those nutritious root vegetables that are grown in elevations above 14,000 feet. Most of the maca root cultivation in Peru is done organically, as they are not prone to pest attacks. Maca roots contain significant amounts of vitamins, minerals and other beneficial compounds. Maca root powder is rich in B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, fats, fatty acids, carbohydrates, etc. Apart from that, it is a good source of minerals, like, calcium, selenium, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, etc. Trace amounts of zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, iron, boron, etc., are also found in maca root. It contains around 18 amino acids that are needed for the human body. It is a good source of certain beneficial sterols, polysaccharides and alkaloids too.

My Thoughts: I add maca root powder to my Green Monster Smoothies, all the healthy vitamins make me strong, superstar strong - remember molly shannon in that SNL skit?  she would sniff her armpits then yell SUPERSTAR, don't worry i'm not sniffing my armpits, just yelling superstar!

AGAVE NECTAR

About:

Agave nectar or agave syrup is obtained from the agave plant, a plant resembling the cactus in appearance, however, is just as succulent as the aloe vera plants. Hailing from Mexico, there are several hundreds of species of agave, but is mostly taken from the blue agave plant. This plant possesses a pina (resembles the pineapple), which contains a sweet sticky sap. This sap when extracted, filtered and heated at low temperatures conduces to formation of the all popular agave nectar. This agave nectar is honey sweet (although not exactly the same), thus, oft referred to as honey water. Agave nectar is used to make tequila and its sweet taste has caused it to become a favorite alternative sweetener. The syrup is used to sweeten beverages, food and desserts. Besides its sweet taste, agave nectar is also known for its health benefits.

People who dislike the taste of honey oft find agave nectar palatable as it has a milder taste and is not as sweet as honey. Vegans opt for agave nectar as it is not from an animal source. Agave nectar with its sweet taste can be added to dishes as a substitute. This way one will avoid gaining the high calories present in sugar. For every cup of sugar, add only 1/3 cup of agave nectar.

Agave nectar contains substances called fructans, which reduce cholesterol and alters fat absorption in the intestine. One such type of fructan in agave nectar is 'inulin', a carbohydrate that promotes weight loss by reducing appetite, increasing satiety and having a low impact on blood sugar. Thus, consuming agave nectar helps weight conscious people from putting on extra pounds.
Agave nectar contains saponins, which is found to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is also seen to be able to boost the immune system, which is why the Aztecs used a mixture of agave nectar and salt to heal wounds.

My thoughts: Agave Nectar rocks my breakfasts and yoghurts and frozen yoghurt, BF used to love maple syrup and brown sugar on his oatmeal - now all i use is a little drizzle (way better word improvement over squirt thankyouverymuch) of Agave Nectar and he is enjoying his oats the healthy aztec way

SHOPPING: Now this i am a bit of an expert in - muahahahaaaa

I buy ALL these products at The Bulk Barn - love love love that store, it carries an amazing amount of health food, till recently i thought all they had was candy you sneak into the movie theatre, yes i'm the person that always brings the extra large purse to the movies that can easily fit a bottled drink and mucho candy for the show, once i snuck in a big mac meal, oh the horror (that i once ate big mac meals, not that i snuck it in, i'm a rebel like that)

For once i'm not going to grace you with yet another breakfast recipe, today i'm attempting to recreate Williams California Salad: one of my fav salads at Williams Fresh Cafe

DONNA'S CITRUS SUNSHINE SALAD

Ingredients

  • Mixed greens (i'm using baby spinach because i'm too lazy to head to the grocery store before work)
  • Trail mix (i'm using raw cashews, sunflower seeds, raisins, pumpkin seeds)
  • Clementine pieces
  • Grated carrot
  • Grated cheddar cheese
  • Citrus dressing (i'm using organicville which is high in calories so i've added some blood orange juice to thin out the dressing and cut back on the calories)

Directions

1. Mix
2. Realize thats it for directions but donna will probably come up with more for blog presentation
3. TIP*** Use the smaller grater part of your grater to help the cheese spread further (this tip is courtesty of my friend Lesley) You will be amazed how much further your cheese will go - and as you know its all about the cheese!
4. Eat dressing on the side if you wish, i always do, i use a lot less salad dressing using this calorie cutting technique
5. Pat Donna on the head for coming up with 3 other directions AND introducing you to an easy peasy delish salad

Salad REVIEW:Yummers -  I really enjoyed this salad, the sweet of the clementines mixed with the salty nuts and the carrot and cheddar mixed in was fabulous, I will definitely be making this again, don't worry i won't bore you with clementine closeups for a second time though!

Fitness: Today i went to Physique 57, the class was led by bad counter (that is what we call this instructor, she is super cute and nice but she has no sense of keeping tempo so i have to keep my own rhythem going so i don't get confused)
***WHINE ALERT: It is soooo hard getting back into working out after vacation, i'm still shaking several hours later but i have to keep motivated, summer is coming on fast and i might have skipped zumba last night so i could eat a silly amount of bonbons in front of the Bachelor (is anyone else team Emily?)

This week my goal is: To eat a salad every day for lunch - i'll keep you updated as to how i'm doing and try to share some more recipes, i'm feeling a salad coming soon that might put me in a feta induced coma, fingers crossed!

Have a great day everyone :o)

Love - is what i have for every single member of my and BFs family
Run - something i love doing with BF, furry baby & sister (even if all 3 of them can outrun me)
Travel - my love of traveling came from my parents who never let having two little girls stop them from discovering the world, they just took us with them

Happy FAMILY day!

Took 7 trys to get this shot!
Family day is a new(ish) holiday in Canada the government introduced to get elected encourage family togetherness - i'm not complaining i get to spend time with the fun group in the above photo - BF, Brother in Law, Sister, Mum, Dad - we are having lunch and letting the fur babies wear each other out, fun times!  Then hopefully we will get to see BFs family (my poor mum-in-law has to work)

My new family (syd was at home - she said camping was lame)
Then BF and i will probably come home, cuddle on the couch and count down the minutes till The Bachelor eerrmmm i mean, watch some kind of meaningful documentary, yeah thats what we will do, the documentary is about a lost man looking for love amongst a bevy of insane and insecure beauties, this documentary has tears, exotic locales and A LOT of roses ;o)

Anyway, i'm sure you are all desperate to know what I had for breakfast today right?  Well get ready, its a doozy today - BF and i branched out of our Oatmeal happy place and tried Oat Bran for the first time!  I picked some Bob Mills OatBran up at Goodness Me, the heath food store in Hamilton where i love to wander around and buy new food to try - my visa does not like Goodness Me though, eating healthy can be pricey (if i'm honest is damn well expensive but its worth it!) my visa is regularly coached by BF to hide in my wallet especially when i'm within a 50 km radius of a lululemon - but i get travel points so i think spending $ gets me free travel so whats the problem?  Did i ever mention i'm a financial advisor with a shopping problem? Lol

I digress, back to the OatBran - Ever since I started reading food blogs its been all about the Oatmeal, BF and I eat it at least 4 times a week, Today I decided to branch out a little and embrace (literally i hugged the package) other forms of oats to fuel us for a day of doing not a whole lot - the best kind of day, right?

A little info about OatBran vs. Oatmeal from here then yet another breakfast recipe you MUST try (if just to shut me up, i'm pretty persistent about sharing my love for all things healthy)

Oat Bran Vs Oatmeal: Nutrition

Although both oat bran and oatmeal bear semblance to one another in terms of their health benefits, oat bran is slightly superior than oatmeal nutritionally. It is higher in fiber, iron and protein content and also contains slightly more calorie and fat content. While the fiber in oat bran is double of that in oatmeal, the protein content is slightly less than double. Iron content is slightly more than double in oat bran. Thus, nutritionally speaking, oat bran is better than oatmeal.

DONNA'S PUMPKIN PIE OATBRAN RECIPE

Ingredients

2/3 of a cup of OatBran
Sweetener (i used 1 pack of stevia)
1 cup of water
1 cup of almond milk (you can use regular milk or just another cup of water here)
2 tsp of chia seeds (optional)
1 Tbsp of ground flax (optional)
1 tsp of pumpkin pie spice
1/8 cup of raisins
1 dollop of pureed pumpkin (yes i said dollop & make sure its plain pumpkin not pie filling)

Directions

1. Bring water and milk to boil over high heat
2. Add Oatbran and boil for 2 minutes
3. Reduce heat to low/medium and add in chia seeds, ground flax, pumpkin spice, raisins, and pumpkin
4. Warm for 1 minute and then put in cute new bowls you bought at Benix yesterday (visa told on me, that or i left the stickers on and these are old bowls babe didn't work)
5. Add Agave Nectar and a sprinkle of brown sugar (for BF, i don't think it needs sugar, i'm sweet enough, hardy har har)
6. Spend 5 minutes coaching the doodle to peepee so you can go back inside and enjoy your oatbran already

FINAL REVIEW

Fantastic, it was almost like eating dessert (reminded me a little of bread and butter pudding, a classic british dessert), We will definitely be eating more OatBran in the future, until then i have these pretty OatBran pictures to remind me of our first meeting (before i killed it with my mouth)

Enjoy your day friends xox

A present from me to you...

Is a good laugh... my present is a good hearty giggle for those of you who need a pick me up and goodness knows at this time of year we all do even though its nice and warm right now in South Western Ontario, i know that it's going to get cold again because my weatherchannel tells me so!  Hope you weren't expecting free lululemon or anything, free lululemon would make the bestest present but now i'm just rubbing it in that all i got you was an afternoon chuckle

My aunt sent this to my mum and it’s a bit british but you get will still get a good laugh, they are complaints written to the head of low income housing properties

Ps: drawers are what they call underwear in England

Complaints to Councils (Council Housing)
Extracts from letters written to local councils, OR "the joys of the English Language":

1 It's the dogs mess that I find hard to swallow.
2 I want some repairs done to my cooker as it has backfired and burnt my knob off.
3 I wish to complain that my father twisted his ankle very badly when he put his foot in the hole in his back passage.
4 Their 18 year old son is continually banging his balls against my fence.
5 I wish to report that tiles are missing from the outside toilet roof. I think it was bad wind the other day that blew them off.
6 My lavatory seat is cracked, where do I stand?
7 I am writing on behalf of my sink, which is coming away from the wall.
8 Will you please send someone to mend the garden path. My wife tripped and fell on it yesterday and now she is pregnant.
9 I request permission to remove my drawers in the kitchen.
10. 50% of the walls are damp, 50% have crumbling plaster, and 50% are just plain filthy.
11. I am still having problems with smoke in my new drawers.
12. The toilet is blocked and we cannot bath the children until it is cleared.
13. Will you please send a man to look at my water, it is a funny colour and not fit to drink.
14. Our lavatory seat is broken in half and now is in three pieces.
15. I want to complain about the farmer across the road. Every morning at 6am his cock wakes me up and it's now getting too much for me.
16. The man next door has a large erection in the back garden, which is unsightly and dangerous.
17. Our kitchen floor is damp. We have two children and would like a third, so please send someone round to do something about it.
18. I am a single woman living in a downstairs flat and would you please do something about the noise made by the man on top of me every night.
19. Please send a man with the right tool to finish the job and satisfy my wife
20. I have had the clerk of works down on the floor six times but I still have no satisfaction.
21. This is to let you know that our lavatory seat is broke and we can't get BBC2.
22. My bush is really overgrown round the front and my back passage has fungus growing in it.
23. He's got this huge tool that vibrates the whole house and I just can't take it any more

God save the QUEEN!

First off, i went to Zumba last night and was FULL of energy, even when we did the new dance that had me going in the wrong direction each and every time for the entire 3m30s song!

While waiting for D to be done squash i used a few weight machines and then hopped on the treadmill, i miss summer running SO bad :o(

Today we  have someone working on the house so i stayed in and utlized Angelas kettle bell 101 tips and then tried my wii zumba game, some how i was chosen to be male and i swear the guy moves in slow motion?  So i finished with some abs that came with a faceful of doodle tail, the furry baby loves to be rightnexttome when i work out at home!  At work now and already feeling it a bit, still trying to decide what classes to go to tomorrow - suggestions?

Not much to say today, i'm having one of those treaded girly fat days, might be because of that very special time of the month is coming (my unreasonable time as D likes to call it), but either way i feel like moo-ing and i can't be reasoned with, it will pass... i hope

Odd title right?  It's the first song that comes to mind when I think about being British!

Yup, thats right, i'm not a "real" canadian, i've lived in Canada for 23 years and still my passport is a shade of plum and i pronounce garage as gar-adge :o)

My accent didn't stick around long, going to school in Canada cured my sister and i of that quite quickly but words not often used around Canadians some times pop up in my vocabulary!

My entire family is british which means everyone but my sister, myself and our cousin all have accents so i'm quite adept at translating odd british words and phrases (did you have to que up for the lift today?)

My uncle and cousin came to Canada about 5 years prior to my parents and couldn't say enough good things about the country, my parents decided to go on an adventure and we moved to Canada justlikethat!  Well not really, lots of tests paperwork, boxes etc...

The memory that stands out the most is my parents talking to my uncle prior to getting on the Wardair flight to Canada and him telling us it was sunny and 25 degrees (in march) and to just pack our winter gear in the boxes being shipped, well we arrived to a blizzard producing about 2 feet of snow and ice, my mum and dad weren't impressed house and car shopping in anoraks and trainers (wind breakers and running shoes) but it was a great introduction to the finicky weather that is Canada

I've been back only once, it was a wonderful trip full of memories of growing up in an entirely different country and i ate A LOT

This post has a purpose, my biggest weakness is british food...

The candy is fab, they use flavours like black currant and raspberry insead of grape and cherry (ewwwwwww)
They lluuurrrvvvveee butter and puddings (desserts)
The grocery stores are full of whole foods, delicous prepared dinners, etc....

My list of favourite british things are

Thortons toffee

Proper english tea
Scotch eggs (though i think they might be scotish)
Pastilles
Scones with fresh cream and jam
Trifle
Banoffee pie

Bubble and squeak
Crisps
Cadbury chocolate buttons
I could go on for DAYS

Seriously, the next time you pass a quaint little british store (you know the one, each town usually has it tucked away in the downtown area), stop in, try something new, you won't regret it, trust me (just don't blame me if you start to moo!)
